Brainstorming

One of the best Brainstorming techniques is the 3 stage BON - B(rainstorm), O(rganize), N(ame)

Materials Needed

  • Paper
  • Pens
  • Biro
  • Marker
  • Cards
  • Bluetack

Phase 1: Brainstorm

Distribute cards and markers.

Tell them all the QUESTION.

On their paper, get them to write down as many things as they can with regard to the QUESTION. Give them xx minutes to do this.

Have them pick TWO items on the list (most important) and put a star next to them. Then give them instructions on making the Card:

  • Landscape
  • Write Big
  • 5-7 Words
  • Put initials in the corner
  • One idea per card

Have them make two cards each and collect them and stick them up on the wall. Read them off and have them mark off any item in their list that may be a repeat.

Then ask for ONE more. Then ONE more… until they are done.

Phase 2: Organize

Nominate two people to do the organizing.

Get the two people to organize the cards into columns by grouping the cards by some similar criteria.

Phase 3: Name

Nominate two different people to do the naming of the columns.

On a new set of cards get them to provide a category name for each column (make the red-bordered cards for these names during the organizing phase).

Result

You will have the collective thoughts of the group on the wall organised into categories. Run through the groups and cards to the group as the conclusion.

This can ideally be then transferred to a mindmap for distribution purposes.
