Business Strategy

The starting point to any business strategy is the strategic plan. Typically a business strategic plan contains the following:

  • Mission - Why does the business exist.
  • Vision - The desired future state.
  • Values - Principles on which decisions and actions are take.
  • Planning - What steps/roadmap are required to achieve the mission.
  • Strategies - How do we achieve the steps/roadmap.
  • Indicators - Measurement of progress.
  • Governance - How do we keep on track.

This plannnig process is a continual loop and takes at a high level the following steps:

  1. Identify where we are today.
  2. Considers Internal and External factors.
  3. Identifies a furture state.
  4. Gap analysis (SWOT)
  5. Consider strategic alternatives
  6. Select strategy
  7. Communicate strategy

We don't want to stay on Business Strategy for long but if you look at the text above you can see these steps apply to any strategy being implemented. IT has to adopt these proven methods for creating and implementing business strategies. Enterprise Architecture is all about this adoption.
